Defeating him makes the tower crumble, but not before he manages to throw one last shot at Algus. At one point he even fuses with the last Gorgon. Astalon tears of the earth bestiary full#The fight with him had multiple phases and you'd need to utilise your party to its full potential. The final showdown against the Black Knight was at hand. This so far is my game of the year and that's saying something considering I've managed to play some pretty unique titles. You also have a lot of replayability with the alternate game modes giving you a different way to experience the game. The story is well told with the character interactions, which gives them distinct personalities. There's plenty of secrets to discover, which gives you a good sense of progression. The backgrounds deserve a special mention since they managed to achieve some striking images with the 8-bit aesthetic. The gameplay is responsive, the level design is superb and there's a huge variety of enemies and environments. He can't talk to Epimetheus for upgrades and I didn't see a way for him to recover health, so going through the tower with him will be a challenge.Īstalon Tears of the Earth is a fantastic game and an easy recommendation for any Metroidvania fan. This unlocked a new mode where you go through the tower with the Black Knight, who has a high jump, can throw energy balls at the cost of some HP and his sword can damage every enemy and destroy blocks. The ending was slightly altered by seeing Algus triumphantly return with the rest of the crew. This time around Algus did use the homunculus as his replacement to evade capture by Epimetheus, who despite being tricked found some respect for Algus' craftiness. Now having all the items and completing the map, I faced the final boss once more. The secret developer area is not part of the map completion. In my defence it was really hard to notice it and I thought the game glitched on me because it erroneously showed that I was missing an item in one of the rooms. Was a bit balls, to be honest. Finally managed to discover a room I was missing to obtain 100% of the map. It was also possible to use certain keys in a very specific sequence and find yourself in a soft-lock situation. The passives that have a chance to grant bonuses (like crits, double soul orbs, or the occasional healing orb) also had lower proc values that mostly made them useless, even maxed out. Algus (my main) had his AOE damage perk busted (literally did nothing), there was no second elevator in the Ruins of Ash, and entire abilities would just randomly stop working for no reason, requiring saving the game and fully shutting it down. So it all worked out, just weirdly.Īs for the rest of your comments, the game was buggier and parts of it significantly tougher before the most recent console patch. Then I got two right away before I went for the last boss, and then the last one after returning to the Hunter after beating the game. And when I saw myself pass by the trophy milestones without them popping, it was bad times. The bestiary trophies caused me to sweat, because I was habitually visiting the Hunter after every death so that I could register my work and get cash money. Would’ve loved to have seen a mode where you have more limited stat upgrades or something.įantastic. I had a look at the two additional new quest/game modes that unlock after beating it but decided it was too steep a challenge for me. I was pretty much 120% on board when I discovered that. It's basically what I wanted Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon to be (even though I loved that as well!).Īlso, very on brand for this game: if you hold attack and jump opposite the direction you're facing, you will jump backwards while continuing to attack in the direction you faced all along. I'm not easily pleased when it comes to these, but Astalon just hit the mark for me on pretty much every front. Glad I took the plunge after reading this thread. Ultimately the highlight of the game to me was its map, so I didn’t really mind. It wasn’t a dealbreaker for me, but it is oddly unbalanced. Algus being very powerful was a reason I held his upgrades back a little. Blew through this in just a few days because I couldn't put it down.
